Food Additives, Hormonal Disruption, IBS and More

In October of 2023, the state of California banned four food additives that have long been associated with adverse health effects including kidney and thyroid disease, digestive disturbance, neurological conditions and cancer. These four are:

-Potassium bromate

-Brominated vegetable oil

-Propylparaben

-Red dye 3

In this blog, I will be highlighting what we should know about the first two.

Potassium bromate, is a flour enhancer, meaning it is used in breads and baked goods to make the dough rise. This common and ubiquitous food additive has been associated with a range of potential health including increased risks of kidney damage and thyroid complications. Popular baked goods such as bread, rolls, and certain pastries often contain this additive, raising alarms about its potential impact on digestive health and the prevalence of associated conditions such as abdominal discomfort and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Prolonged exposure to even trace amounts of this compound has been associated with gastrointestinal disturbances.

Potassium Bromate has also been found to interfere with neurological functions. While the exact mechanisms are still being studied, concerns have been raised about the compound's ability to impact nerve signaling and synaptic transmission, which could lead to disruptions in cognitive functions and overall neurological health.

Brominated vegetable oil (BVO), a widely used emulsifier in numerous citrus-flavored soft drinks and sports beverages, has raised concerns within the health community due to its potential negative impact on human health. Research has indicated that regular consumption of BVO-laden beverages may contribute to adverse health effects, including thyroid dysfunction and disrupted hormone balance. Additionally, the presence of BVO in popular sodas and flavored drinks has been linked to reports of skin rashes and other dermatological issues among sensitive individuals. As the awareness of BVO's potential health risks continues to grow, consumers are advised to scrutinize product labels and opt for healthier alternatives, fostering a culture of informed decision-making and promoting the adoption of BVO-free options within the beverage industry.

As awareness continues to grow, it is imperative for both consumers and industries to remain vigilant and make informed choices to mitigate the potential health risks associated with potassium bromide and BVO exposure. If you have a sense that certain dietary habits have negatively impacted your vitality and health, discuss your concerns with a trained medical specialist who can make a clinical assessment based on the interconnectedness of your immune, endocrine and digestive systems.
